What does this career involve?
A vertiport is to an air taxi what a station is to a train: a compact site in a city or at an airport where electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft land, swap passengers, recharge and leave within minutes. The operations manager runs all of it: safety on the pads, check-in and security, charging, turnaround, liaison with air traffic control and the aircraft operators, weather decisions, noise, and relations with the neighbours. It is airport operations on a small, fast-moving scale, with electricity rather than jet fuel at the centre.
Why is this a future career?
In development, not yet in service (autumn 2026). No commercial vertiport is operating in the UK, and no eVTOL has yet carried a paying passenger here. In November 2025 the Civil Aviation Authority published proposals for regulating the aircraft, their pilots and landing sites, aiming to allow commercial services from 2028. A vertiport for flight trials was completed at Bicester in Oxfordshire in 2025, and an eVTOL developed in Bristol flew in public at an airshow in July 2026. Whoever runs the first UK sites will be doing a job nobody here has done before.

You do not need an engineering degree for this. Airport, airfield and ground handling jobs, and the careers above, are the usual routes in. Geography, maths and business studies all help.
