Aerospace Cybersecurity Specialist

Keeping connected aircraft, spacecraft and ground systems secure

Finding and closing weaknesses in the digital systems that aviation and space now run on, from aircraft software and data links to satellite control networks.

What does this career involve?

Modern aircraft, satellites and airports depend on software and networks, and every one of them is a possible target. Aerospace cyber security specialists test new aircraft systems before they are certified, check that a satellite’s command link cannot be taken over, watch an airline’s networks for intrusions, and lead the response when something goes wrong. The work combines mainstream security skills, such as penetration testing and incident response, with a working knowledge of how aircraft and spacecraft are built, flown and regulated.

Why is this a future career?

New role, taking on people now (autumn 2026). Airlines, manufacturers, satellite operators and defence companies advertise for it. Ten years ago most aircraft were largely closed systems; now they exchange data with the ground throughout a flight, maintenance is planned from live aircraft data, and satellites are commanded over networks that have to be defended. Regulation has caught up: the Civil Aviation Authority oversees cyber security at UK airlines, airports and air traffic providers, and EU rules now require manufacturers, airports and airlines to run information security management systems.
