What does this career involve?
A spaceport operations manager keeps a launch site safe, legal and ready. During a launch campaign that means agreeing the schedule with the rocket company, arranging clearance of the airspace and sea areas around the site, overseeing the storage and handling of propellants, and making sure the emergency plans work. Between launches the job is maintenance, inspections, staff training, meeting the conditions of the site’s licence and keeping the local community informed. It is closer to running an airport or a high-hazard industrial site than to designing rockets.
Why is this a future career?
In development, not yet in service (autumn 2026). The UK has licensed spaceports, but no rocket has yet reached orbit from British soil. Spaceport Cornwall was licensed in November 2022 and hosted the UK’s first orbital launch attempt in January 2023; it did not reach orbit. SaxaVord in Shetland became the UK’s first licensed vertical launch site in December 2023, and its first launch has been delayed several times. Once launches become routine, each site will need managers who have done it before, and that experience barely exists here yet.
