Work experience placements and programmes offered by the SACP’s Supporting Companies, for students from Year 10 onwards. The SACP signposts these opportunities rather than arranging placements: applications go directly to each organisation, and each sets its own dates, locations and entry requirements. <p>GKN Aerospace runs week-long work experience placements for students aged 14 to 18 at its Bristol and Cowes sites, covering engineering, IT, procurement and health and safety. Applications are made directly to each site with a CV and covering letter.</p>

<p>SSTL runs one-week work experience placements at its Guildford site each summer for students in Years 10 to 13, across areas including space systems engineering, ground software, IT and supply chain. Some placements are open to over-18s only. Placements typically advertised during summer.</p>

Aerospace Engineering Broader STEM Y10-11 Y12-13 Post-18
<p>AtkinsRéalis offers free virtual work experience through Springpod, open to students aged 13 and over and completed at your own pace, with a certificate on completion. Paid summer and year-long placements are available for undergraduates.</p>

<p>Babcock runs Future Engineers work experience for Year 10 students at sites including Devonport, with virtual placements also offered in some years, plus paid summer internships and placement years for undergraduates. How to approach an opportunity

Work experience is rarely advertised in the way jobs are. Most placements go to students who make polite, well prepared enquiries. Here is how to make a strong start.

1. Shortlist & research

Pick three to five organisations that match your interests. Read their website and recent news, and find out what their engineers and teams actually do.

2. Write a clear email

Address a named person where you can. Say your year group, why this organisation, and what you would like to learn. Keep it under 200 words.

3. Ask thoughtful questions

What does a typical week look like? Which routes did the team take into the industry? Are insight days, virtual visits or shadowing available?

4. Be realistic

Many programmes have fixed application windows or more applicants than places. A polite no is not the end: ask to be kept in mind for the next intake.
